Alpacaa’s been asking for a video of healing the Valithria Dreamwalker encounter for, well, ever. I finally remembered to flip on recording on a recent farming night. Happily, we had a few DPS go in that night so we get to see Portal Jockey (25 player).
The thing that still gets me about this encounter is how maddening it is to try and guess the position of the barely visible red clouds. They’re not 3d objects. No, they’re flat textures that are always rotated as though you’re looking at them head on. It takes a silly amount of camera fiddling to discover their position in space. I hope they do away with this particularly clumsy bit of rendering in Cataclysm.
For the overly thorough: here’s a link to the worldoflogs healing report for the fight in the video. Before it expires into the mists of time, at least.

I like the bit at the end where I’m getting whacked on by an Archmage. Thank god for Glyph of Healing Wave. Thanks for the vid, Zab.
This is the wrong post to put this in I am sure, but since it is the most recent I figured you would notice faster. In your post “Data Mining Endgame Raiders with Wowhead” and in your gear I see that everyone is stacking int gems. I understand why this is a good thing, but I have always wondered how exactly your meta gem is getting activated? The meta requires 1 bue, 1 red, and 1 yellow. With the Nightmare tear in the red helm socket and yellow [Brilliant King's Amber] in all of the other slots I am wondering where you are getting the credit for a blue socket in order to activate the meta gem? Please forgive me if this is a noob question, I just always thought you had to have a matching gem in a matching socket, or at least a duel color gem, to activate your meta gem. Additionally, if you are ignoring the meta why even have it in place?
No worries!
You know, it’s not a dumb question. The gemming mechanics are non-intuitive and the UI does a terrible job of presenting what’s going on.
The first trick is that the meta gems are activated by the color of gems that are in sockets, not the color of the sockets. A red gem in any socket will count as one red gem for the meta, no matter what socket its in.
The second trick is that multi-colored gems count as one gem for the meta activation for each of its component colors. An orange gem, for example, will count as both a red and a yellow gem for the meta.
So the prismatic nightmare tear counts as one gem of every color and activates the meta all by itself.
And no, there is no way you could have possibly known this if you only relied on content in the game. We all learn it from external guides or experimentation. That’s a clear failure on Blizzard’s part.
I am unable to get this achievement on any level (I’ve successfully completed 10reg, 10heroic and 25reg) because I’m always either in a portal when she finishes or I miss the last portal spawn. Beyond asking my team to hold off on healing during the final portal, what should a Holy Paladin do to get this achievement?
Hey zab great video, I have one question has your guild ever done the trick with the hunter’s pet for the constant glyph of holy light bonus? the way it works is you put a hunters pet next, under, or just near the boss and once the portals come out just stand in yours and heal the pet with the boss beacon as you showed in this video that way doesn’t matter if your far away your splash will work. but great video tho keep them coming
Yeah, it’s just a hassle to set up with the hunters. With the 30% buff these days it’s almost not worth the effort :).
Huh, it isn’t awarded if you’re in the portal as she’s healed to full? I’ve never had that trouble in 10s or 25s. As you say, that just requires coordination with the folks who are healing. It might help to make sure the outside healers don’t touch her and blow heroism/bloodlust once all the bulk healers leave the portal so that you have a chance of healing her with everyone out before the next set of portals pop.
As for missing the portals, well, don’t do that :).
